I’m trying to purchase a mutual fund for an IRA. When I look at a fund’s history everything is in negative numbers due to last years crash. Some funds have a positive return “since inception” but show a negative return over 10 years or less. How can I adequately judge a funds performance when they are showing these kinds of returns?

Look at a funds return against its benchmark index. And look at fees.

I agree with poster #1, compare how a fund has performed against it’s benchmark and/or peers. Other than bear market funds, most equity funds have struggled the last 10 yrs. And considering the 2 brutal bear markets we’ve had this decade, that is not too suprising.

Invest for the long term, and don’t worry too much about the last 10 yrs.
